Genre Guesstimation – How I Got into College (1989)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Jason Stershic of Agent Palmer and we will be reviewing our favorite College Themed Movies..

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Feb by sending them to collegejason@movierob.net

Tnx Jason!

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of College Themed Movies ………

“[about the SAT test] Guessing cannot hurt you. You have the B&B guarantee on that. Just close your eyes and point.” – Francine Bauer, SAT Coach

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Cable in the 80’s or 90’s and 1 Feb 2022)

Brief Synopsis – College students try to find the best way to get accepted to their choice college.

My Take on it – Fun look at the art of getting into college.

The story itself feels quite dated, but they still do a fine job showing the various tactics and methods used by both students and administrators as they try to get in to the college of their choice.

They show the various pitfalls and problems that can arise along the way and do it in a nice way.

Unfortunately, the characters are all quite superficial and none of them do anything that makes them more memorable.

Loved the way that this film uses the characters of A and B to help describe lots of situations and that is actually the main thing I recalled from this movie even though I haven’t seen it in over 30 years.

The cast is fine, and it was nice seeing Anthony Edwards in an integral role, but none of them really stand out here.

The various pranks and situations that occur here are ok and it manages to have some humorous points along the way.

The film was directed by Savage Steve Holland who was most notably the director of Better Off Dead (1985) and One Crazy Summer (1986)

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The original director, Jan Eliasberg was fired during production and replaced by Savage Steve Holland. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not really. Fun idea that has a few unique aspects to it, but overall isn’t very good beyond that.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
