Just Friends (2005)

“You and I are gonna be the greatest musical manager team since Jessica Simpson and her father only you and I get to “mreow” and they can’t, ’cause it’s illegal. I looked it up. ” – Samantha James

Number of Times Seen – Twice (2 May 2006 and 1 Feb 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A music executive returns to his home town and meets his former best friend from High school who rejected him when he asked her out.

My Take on it – Great premise that isn’t as powerful as one might hope.

They do a nice job of making things very nostalgic for the 90’s with the music and atmosphere.

The makeup effects are great in the flashback scenes and is comes across quite realistic looking.

The comic moments between the characters works well especially when they also add in the fact that these two characters used to be so close.

The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart is great throughout and it’s easy to believe the fact that they use to be the best of friends despite him wanting to change that.

Anna Faris and Chris Klein are also able to add some humor into the story along the way.

The film has some generic tropes dealing with unrequited love between friends and such and works well from that standpoint, but overall is just average in all that it does.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – It took 4 hours to put the 12-pound “face” on Ryan Reynolds. When Reynolds stepped outside in full fat make-up, a fan of his came up to him and asked if Ryan Reynolds was inside. He said yes and pretended he wasn’t himself. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
