Men In Black (1997)

“This caused the 1977 New York blackout. A practical joke by the great attractor. He thought it was funny as hell.” – Kay

Number of Times Seen – 3-5 times (Theater in ’97, 7 Jan 2000, DVD and 14 Feb 2022)

Brief Synopsis – An NYPD detective is recruited into a Governmental organization that tracks and deals with aliens on Earth.

My Take on it – Fun movie that works due to the unique feel and look of it all.

Barry Sonnenfield is able to brings his personal touch to help make things look more animated and realistic despite the use of lots and lots of special effects.

The casting of Tommy lee Jones and Will Smith as the two partners is great and they help keep things so much fun due to the very diverse nature of each of the characters.

The story itself is a bit bland, but the use of many jokes relating to pop culture and conspiracy theories helps keep things quiet fun the whole way through.

The film does go a bit overboard with the visuals which can be borderline gross and I would recommend that one doesn’t eat throughout the film because it can be a bit too much even though it still adds to the atmosphere of it all.

The supporting cast is also great with Tony Shalhoub, Rip Torn, Linda Fiorentino and Vincent D’Onofrio all enhancing the world that they create here.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The “known aliens” visible on the screen include Al Roker, Isaac Mizrahi, Danny DeVito, director Barry Sonnenfeld, Chloe Sonnenfeld (Barry’s daughter), Sylvester Stallone, Dionne Warwick, Newt Gingrich, Anthony Robbins, George Lucas, and executive producer Steven Spielberg. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
