Seems Like Old Times (1980)

“Hot Damn! I finally get a chance to chase the po-lice! “- Chester

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Mar 2022)

Brief Synopsis – After a man is forced to commit a bank robbery at gunpoint, he turns to his ex-wife for help.

My Take on it – Really fun film that works so well due to the joint work of Neil Simon, Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn.

The characters are quite outrageous, but the two lead actors help make them feel even more genuine and realistic along the way due to the superb chemistry between them along the way.

It’s too bad that the two of them only costarred twice over the years; here and in Foul Play (1978) because they could have done so much more together.

Niel Simon was a superb writer who knew how to get dialogue so right and this film is no exception to that.

The story unfolds in such a fun way and it keeps surprising since it is quite unpredictable the whole way through.

The film does fit into the genre of the screwball comedies of the 30’s and 40’s and that enhances things even more.

I love the supporting cast here and Charles Grodin, TK Carter, Robert Guillaume and Harold Gould because they add so much to the atmosphere and slapstick feel for the whole story.

Chase was so great in comedies of the 70’s and 80’s and can’t believe that his star fell along the way because he was so enjoyable to watch in these kind of roles.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The picture had a two-week rehearsal period in which, during this time, Writer Neil Simon customized the screenplay to tailor the lead stars’ personalities. During the two-week rehearsal period, Simon observed the needs of his stars and was able to re-write portions of the script to better suit their individual personalities. “There is a terrific quality about Chevy (Chase),” says Simon, “He’s the bad boy in class. You never know what he is going to do. I tried to capture that in the script and in each day’s re-writes.” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
