Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Mar 2022)
Brief Synopsis – Two former Vietnam Vets try to reconcile their friendship and the trauma that they suffered together during their service.
My Take on it – This is a movie that has so much more potential than is unfortunately realized.
Robert De Niro and Ed Harris are both great actors, but it seems as if they aren’t utilized here well enough with these roles.
The story is all about redemption and finding a way to rekindle a long lost friendship.
In addition, the characters try to find a way to return to normal life even after many years of solitude.
The story tells in flashback some of what occurred when they were in Vietnam, but fails to dive deeper into the real trauma that has affected both of these men in very different ways.
I really liked the way that the story shows a budding relationship between De Niro and Kathy Baker (Harris’ sister), but it feels a bit too forced in the end.
The film has some great dramatic scenes that help show how their lives have been changed by their experiences during the war, but something constantly feels missing that would help make it feel even more poignant and profound.
This kind of story has been done both before and afterwards more effectively and it’s a shame that they weren’t able to find a way to make this one better.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Originally set to be a starring vehicle for Jeff Bridges. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
