Genre Guesstimation – Big Fan (2009)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Tyler of the Geek Card Check and we will be reviewing our favorite Sports Themed Movies.

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Sports Themed Movies..

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Apr 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A sports super fan gets into a fight that changes his perspective on his life.

My Take on it – Film does a nice job showing the fine line between a person and a myth. The story deals with sports, but this can easily be related to so many other aspects of life like politics or entertainment. I think Patton Oswalt is the perfect actor to be cast in this role, but something still feels off about the way that his characters does things here. The way that society perceives fandom is personified here quite well and that adds to the enjoyment of watching how things move along even if this movie loses much of its impact in the final third.

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not really. Great idea, but far from being perfect because of the way things play out in the third act.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
