Genre Guesstimation – D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Tyler of the Geek Card Check and we will be reviewing our favorite Sports Themed Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Apr by sending them to tylersport@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Sports Themed Movies..

“Hey, Goldberg! I bet if that puck was a cheeseburger, you’d stop it! Ha-ha-ha!” – Russ Tyler

Number of Times Seen – 1 (12 Apr 2022)

Brief Synopsis – Gordon Bombay is hired to coach the US Junior Hockey team and brings along his players to help them defeat the unstoppable Icelandic team.

My Take on it – I decided that in order to make my guest choices of the Genre for the Genre Grandeur series more personal (and expand my own personal horizons of these genres), I will take a recommendation from my guest for a film to watch for this Genre Guesstimation series.

This series was Tyler’s choice for me to watch.

Not being a fan of hockey, I never really sought out to watch this sequel and was happy to finally see what it was all about.

Unfortunately, the story seems to follow along much of the same path as the original and fails to being anything new or innovative to this kind of story.

The film beings back many of the players from the first film and in order to inject some freshness to things, it brings in a few other players who are typically stereotypical of different parts of the country.

These new characters all have fun edges to what they bring here despite the fact that it doesn’t manage to give us anything more than a superficial look at who each of them are.

The film isn’t able to reach the level of the previous movie in terms of its message and falls short of eclipsing its predecessor despite still remaining fun most of the way along.

Loved seeing Kenan Thompson is his debut and it’s funny seeing him as a kid.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The scene after the first game with Iceland where Coach Bombay makes the team do sprints is based on Herb Brooks’ 1980 US Olympic team when they tied the Norwegian national team in an exhibition game. The team skated for about an hour even though the rink manager had turned the lights off. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Nope. The film has a few fun aspects to it, but overall, just retreads much of what we have already seen in the previous film.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (6/10)
