Gilbert (2017)

“He doesn’t really filter himself and I think that’s why people are drawn to him in this politically correct world we live in to have a loose cannon running around in the world is refreshing. I mean if someone doesn’t say it nobody will.” – Jeffrey Ross

Number of Times Seen – 1 (13 Apr 2022)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary that shares the life and career of legendary comic Gilbert Gottfried who tries to juggle a late marriage with an extensive career as a no holds barred comedian.

My Take on it – This is a movie I came across after learning about the untimely death of Gilbert Gottfried recently.

I’ve always loved his brand of comedy and after hearing this sad news, I looked around for a few films or documentaries featuring him.

What a fascinating look at the life of a comedian who mid-stream needed to change the way he lived his life.

The film gives the viewer a very intimate look at Gottfried’s life and career in ways that one wouldn’t expect to see.

The see the Jekyl and Hyde aspects of his life is really fascinating to see as he finds ways to keep these two parts of him very separate throughout.

Love the way that this film allows the viewer to also hear the perspectives of how his late marriage and family changed his life from a more neutral perspective which enhances things so much more.

Watching this film under the present circumstances is quite sad, but at least there is a legacy showing how he lived his life which leaves such an impact on others who need to find ways to compartmentalize parts of life while not wanting to neglect any aspect along the way.

Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Gottfried’s singular outlook on life and his ability to bring humor to even the darkest situations has, at times, gotten him into trouble. Still he soldiers on, an expert craftsman at bringing his audience to the edge (and sometimes pushing them over). (From Gilbertmovie.com)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
