The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by Matthew Simpson of Awesome Friday and we will be reviewing our favorite Non-Winning Oscar Best Picture Nominees.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to AwesomeMatthew@movierob.net
Try to think out of the box!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Non-Winning Oscar Best Picture Nominees.
“Despite knowing the journey… and where it leads… I embrace it… and I welcome every moment of it.” – Louise Banks
Number of Times Seen – Twice (14 Nov 2016 and 1 May 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A linguist is recruited to help the military get a better understanding of how to communicate with a new species that has landed on Earth.
My Take on it – Intriguing stiry that is quite unique in the way that it progresses. They do a really nice job trying to explain things in a visual way especially given how the story unfolds. Adams and Renner are great together and each show that they can play these scientific characters quite effectively and realistically. The choice to make a non-threatening alien encounter also works well and helps keep things profound and unique as things move along. The added ideas about time and space also are utilized quite well and that enhances the story even more. I’m still a bit baffled as to why this is a story nominated for Best Picture tho even if it is quite good.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – While the shape of the ship was decided early on, Denis Villeneuve had great difficulty imagining an interior that would allow humans to easily navigate through such a steep and vertical design. The later decision to turn gravity sideways offered an obvious and convenient solution. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not really despite being great storytelling. A unique way of telling such a story that works well, but isn’t Earth shattering.
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
