The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by Matthew Simpson of Awesome Friday and we will be reviewing our favorite Non-Winning Oscar Best Picture Nominees.
Please get me your submissions by the 25th of May by sending them to AwesomeMatthew@movierob.net
Try to think out of the box!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Non-Winning Oscar Best Picture Nominees.
“No one paid any attention to the orchestra. Ellie could have saved that 85 bucks!” – Stanley T. Banks
Number of Times Seen – Twice (17 Feb 2015 and 22 May 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A middle aged father tries to deal with the fact that his daughter is about to get married.
My Take on it – Really enjoyable film that works so well due to Spencer Tracy’s work as the lead. He gets the narration down so well and that helps the viewer get an even more intimate view of what is going on. The story is quite timeless and hat’s probably one of the main reasons that it’s been remade at least twice in the 70+ years since this came out. Many of the aspects of the story are still relevant in today’s society and that is interesting to see. Something still feels missing that would have made this even more powerful and I’m still a bit confused as to how this was nominated for Best Picture.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Spencer Tracy wanted Katharine Hepburn for his screen wife, but it was felt that they were too romantic a team to play a happily domesticated couple with children, so Joan Bennett got the part. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes close. Tracy is great here and the story works really well but is missing something that would help it be even more powerful.
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
