“To tell you the truth, I would rather have a complete idiot for a child than an ingrate.” – Max Roby
Number of Times Seen – Twice (2 Oct 2008 and 30 Jun 2022)
Brief Synopsis – A restaurateur in a small New England town, constantly lives with the dream of leaving, yet never does.
My Take on it – This is a great story with an all star cast. The miniseries is able to show how small town life can be while creating a lived in world that feels so real. Ed Harris is superb in the lead and the eclectic group of characters helps keep things so interesting to watch unfold. Paul Newman is quite memorable as Harris’ father. The book this is based on was also written by Richard Russo, who among other things, also write Nobody’s Fool (1994) which also starred Newman. Both of these stories revolve around small town life and the various men and women who inhabit it. The story shows that even in a small town, politics can be quite strong which helps keep things so engaging as the story moves in directions that one might not always expect.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Matthew McConaughey was asked to play the young version of Paul Newman’s character. He turned it down. (From IMDB)
