Genre Guesstimation – The Brady Bunch Hawaiian Vacation (1972)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by me and we will be reviewing our favorite Family Vacation Movies.

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Aug by sending them to FamilyVacation@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Family Vacation Movies.

“I’m sure glad Greg didn’t get hurt. It would have ruined our picnic tomorrow! ” – Cindy

Number of Times Seen – No clue (Numerous times on TV and 3 Aug 2022)

Brief Synopsis – The Brady family travels to Hawaii where they encounter an ancient idol that could mean bad luck for anyone possessing it.

My Take on it – This is another 3 part vacation story arc for the Brady’s and it starts off amazingly especially since it has some very tense cliffhangers built in to the story.

The problem is that the final third of the story is too bland and cheesy given the way that they deal with it all.

Once again great seeing the Brady clan outside of LA and their normal comfort zones and it truly looks as if they are having so much fun.

The film gives the cast a chance to reflect on some of the most famous sites in the State including a touching one at the Arizona Memorial.

Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Mike comes home with the tickets, his hair is straight. When the Bradys get to Hawaii, his hair is permed. This is not because he went to the hair salon, it’s because the humidity in the Hawaiian air brought out his natural curly hair. Florence Henderson specifically commented on this in a TV interview she once gave. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes close. Definitely a great story arc, but the final part doesn’t work as well and detracts from the strong start.

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
