The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
This month’s genre has been chosen by me and we will be reviewing our favorite Family Vacation Movies.

Try to think out of the box!
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Family Vacation Movies.
“I’ve never even heard of the original vacation.” – James Griswold
“Doesn’t matter. The new vacation will stand on its own.” – Rusty Griswold
Number of Times Seen – Twice (20 Sep 2015 and 19 Aug 2022)

Brief Synopsis – A grown up Russ Griswold takes his family on a vacation in order to try and regain his connection to his family.
My Take on it – Such a great idea to reboot this film 30 years after the original with a brand new cast yet still shows the way the next generation deals with family vacations. Great cast led by Ed Helms and Christina Applegate keeps the level of humor quite high throughout. The film finds its own voice despite technically being the 5th movie in a series and works quite well. Helms does a great job in the lead role and shows that he is just as talented as Chevy Chase was when he made the original film in the series. The way that they constantly refer to the previous movies as part of the character’s ‘history’ is done really well and is enhanced when watching all of these movies in a row. They also have some great cameos along the way that add to the connections between the films in the series. Really like the way that Applegate’s character has more to do in this movie than her “mother-in-law” did in the previous films which adds to the family aspect of the story.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Ed Helms is looking through old family photos, images of all the other films are shown, including the old “Rustys”. (From IMDB)
Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Comes really close. It is definitely one of the very best comedy remakes/reboots.
Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10) (no change from original review)
