“You were a writer. That was your purpose. And if it took a divorce to light a fire under your tuchus, maybe that’s a good thing.” – Ruth
Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Aug 2022)
Brief Synopsis – After his parents divorce, a young boy moves with his mother from New York City to Indiana and must try and figure out how to still celebrate his bat-mitzvah in his new surroundings where he will become a man.
My Take on it – Interesting idea that suffers from the fact that it caters to so many usual tropes of the genre. The unique aspects of having this as a musical works well and the songs are choreographed quite well. The cats is fine but even having Rhea Perlman and Debra Messing in key ‘adult’ roles doesn’t help make things feel more powerful as one might expect. Perlman has the best lines and steals every scene she is in since she adds so much more fun to the way that the story moves along.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The 2008 Broadway production is notable for being the professional debuts of Ariana Grande as Charlotte and Elizabeth Gillies as Lucy, who would later go on to star together in the Nickelodeon television series Victorious. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
