Wild Wild West (1999)

“The wrongs will be righted! The past made present! The United – divided!” – Dr. Arliss Loveless

Number of Times Seen – At least twice (Theater in 1999 and 7 Sep 2022)

Brief Synopsis – Two mismatched Federal officers try to stop a mad scientist from kidnapping the President in the Old West.

My Take on it – Such a waste!

This film had so much potential and the tongue in cheek way that they present it just doesn’t work at all.

The original TV show that this idea is based on was a lot of fun, but they still tried to take things more seriously and that is lacking here.

The tone is completely comedic and things just don’t work at all.

Both Will Smith and Kevin Kline are great actors, but the way that they play these characters fails to engage and entertain because they have no chemistry with one another while also keeping these characters feeling too distant.

None of the characters are developed very well and they all come across as complete caricatures.

Kenneth Branagh plays the villain in an over the top fashion that is far too much.

This attempt to create a James Bond style character in the old west is atrocious and watching it just makes me wonder once again…WHY????

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Though a box-office failure in the U.S. (it managed to turn a profit overseas), it’s commonly joked that the only reason this movie earned any money at all is because unaccompanied minors would buy tickets to this movie, then use them to sneak into screenings of South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) and American Pie (1999). (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
