Brief Synopsis – During World War II, a woman’s baseball league was formed in order to replace the Major league due to the players joining the war effort.
My Take on it – Amazing film that is able to take the idea of the women’s baseball league and make it so poignant.
The characters are very memorable and they manage to find a way to keep the baseball aspect of the story quite thrilling to watch even if we just get snippets of most of the games.
The film also is able to give us some great personal conflict between the characters which enhances the story so much.
The cast is spectacularly led by Geena Davis and Tom Hanks, and even the supporting characters are quite memorable in all that they say and do along the way.
The fact that the film is book-ended by real images of the Cooperstown commemoration to the real women who were part of the league when it ran in the 40’s.
This film has some very poignant moments that make things even better to watch unfold.
Penny Marshal did an amazing job directing this film and it plays out so well.
Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jon Lovitz had a more substantial role in the film’s initial cut. During the extensive post-production editing and screening process, the filmmakers used only his meanest comments and most obvious punchlines and found the audience was roaring with laughter at everything he said. They decided to focus on those moments, cut out extraneous material, and ended up with one of the most popular elements of the final film. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
