Genre Guesstimation – To Rome With Love (2012)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s genre has been chosen by Emily of The Flapper Dame and we will be reviewing our favorite Films That Take Place in Italy…

Please get me your submissions by the 25th of Feb by sending them to italy@movierob.net

Try to think out of the box!

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Films That Take Place in Italy…..

“If something is too good to be true, you can bet it’s not. ” – John

Number of Times Seen – 1 (14 Feb 2023)

Brief Synopsis – A group of people living and visiting Rome experience love and other adventures.

My Take on it – I have always found Woody Allen films to be either hit or miss and this one unfortunately fits into the latter category.  The film has too many characters for its own good and the jumping between all of their storylines gets a bit too confusing especially since they really don’t manage to tie them all together in the end. As with most Woody Allen films, the cast is amazing and he is always able to get so many talented people to join in on his projects even if they are just in relatively small parts.  The story starts off well, but by the end gets far too erratic and messy for its own good.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The term ‘Ozymandias Melancholia’, which is mentioned three times throughout the film, was invented by Woody Allen for his movie Stardust Memories (1980). (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all. This is far from Allen’s best work and the overlapping storylines just make things more confusing and erratic throughout.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
