For the Love of Spock (2016)

“The pendulum swung completely when that first movie came along, from being an actor and character-oriented Star Trek, to an effects-oriented Star Trek. And the feeling was, “we didn’t have the money before. Now we got the money, we got to give them a big effects movie.” It was all about the ship, the ship, the effects, this effect, that effect, and we’re going through this thing. Now, we’re going through that thing. Nothing about the characters. So it was frustrating, and depressing, and uh very painful.” – Leonard Nimoy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (6 Mar 2023)

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about the impact on pop culture that both Leonard Nimoy and his iconic character Spock had on us all.

My Take on it – Amazing documentary that is able to tell a great story. The fact that it was produced and directed by Nimoy’s son Adam shows how personal and intimate a film like this can be. They have lots of insightful interviews with fan of the show, family members and even other stars from the various Star Trek Incarnations. The movie caters so much to the more than casual fan of Spock and Star Trek, yet still allows for things to be critical of Nimoy’s decisions in life. Love the way that this film is able to give the viewer so much information that can only be garnered from this kind of comprehensive look at a life.

Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The making of the movie was a plot item in The Big Bang Theory: The Spock Resonance (2015) (S9E7, originally aired 11/5/15), in which the character Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is interviewed as part of the development of this film. This is why Parsons appears in the documentary as both Sheldon and as himself. Ironically, although Sheldon is a big Star Trek fan, Parsons has never watched any of the shows. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10)
