“ZZ Top plays the blues, but they don’t sing the blues. They turn the blues into party music.” – Robin Hoods Brian
Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Mar 2023)
Brief Synopsis – Documentary about one of the only bands where the players have stayed together for over 50 years.
My Take on it – As a child of the 80’s, I was very influenced by the early days of MTV, and there were lots and lots of videos at the time featuring music by ZZ Top. When I cam across this documentary, I was fascinated to learn even more about them. The film does a great job explaining how the band came to be and more importantly, how they managed to stay together longer than just about any other contemporary band; a staggering 50+ years. The movie is quite forward about the ups and downs over the course of their careers, yet they always managed to find a way to persevere and continue to do what they love most and give their fans what they deserve.
Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Very early in their career, ZZ Top had a gig in Alvin, Texas, where they went on stage behind a curtain, and when it went up there was only one person in the house. He looked confused or nervous, and started to get up to leave, but they begged him to stay, played an hour set, then bought him a Coke for sticking around – and then played an encore! Hill says that man still comes to their shows, but won’t ever tell them his name. He just says, “remember me, I was at that show!” and they say of course they remember him. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
