amelie-quad-posterThis month’s Rob’s Genre Grandeur is Alternative Love Stories. My suggestion: DON’T Google “Alternative Love Stories”, because really, the results are really, really alternative and blocked by most companies.

I Google’d “Quirky Lovestories” rather, and Ameliè popped up as one of the choices. I don’t know if this movie really fits in with Abbi’s definition, but I definitely find it both alternative and quirky.

Why? Ameliè is the antithesis of a character that is usually cast as a female lead. She is shy, removed from society and has a peculiar and refreshing view on the world. Falling in love with her Nino is a byproduct of the story, not the main plot line. She is cute, sneaky and charming in the method she hunts down her beloved, and their end is very sweet and specific to her character. The movie is also not only about love, but more about doing good and how a kind person wins at something. There is also the refreshing benefit of watching a movie about someone that finds so much joy in being kind to other people.

The movie is in French but with subtitles, so that might annoy a few people but mostly I found that part of the charm. It also has the astoundingly beautiful France as a backdrop. The sub-characters are as charming as the main character and complement her adventures very well. I really enjoyed the originality and progression of the film – it is fresh and wonderful. I really recommend this if you haven’t seen it yet!

    • I’m so happy to hear that you also like it! It is a great film and I think has appeal to people who wouldn’t usually watch within that genre. I really loved Amelie as a character. She is so refreshing.
