Major League II (1994)

ml2“[drunk] So, Hiroshi “Kamikaze” Tanaka, recently of the Tokyo Giants, knocks himself cold for the second time this week. Maybe in Japan, that’s actually better than catching the ball. Personally, I think he’s just trying to get out of the lineup. ” – Harry Doyle

Number of Times Seen – at least 3 (Cable during the 90’s, 24 Jul 2009 and 31 Oct 2016)

Brief Synopsis – The Indian team that won the Pennant the previous year need to try and get back on track after the get into a sophomore slump.

My Take on it – I have always been against the idea of making pointless sequels that add little to the real story of the original film and this movie is a good example of that.

This feels like a duplicate of the original film and too many of the scenes are just retreads of what happened a few years earlier in the first film.

Some of the characters that were developed and introduced to us so well in the first film now feels somewhat soiled by the way they are portrayed here.

In general, this all feels mediocre at best despite not being completely terrible.

Loved watching Bob Uecker once again as the funny color commentator Harry Doyle who is ever so chipper even when the chips are down.

This is really a great example of a sequel that instead of adding to the original movie actually feels as if it detracts from the groundwork achieved beforehand.

Bottom Line – Feels like a carbon copy of the first film and just doesn’t work as well.  The characters established so well during the first movie are soiled upon here and everything seems to be mediocre at best. Uecker is once again funny with his color commentary.  Good example of a sequel that detracts from instead of adds to the way the first film was thought of.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The character Isuro Tanaka was something of an anomaly of that time. At the time of the film’s release, there were no Japanese players in the Major Leagues, and only one Japanese player had ever played (briefly) for a ML team. The influx of Japanese players in US Major League baseball didn’t begin until a few years after the film’s release.  (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
