Movies From the Hat V #13 – Mark H.’s Pick – Mother and Child (2009)

This is my 2962nd Review

Thanks to Mark H. of FastFilm Reviews for this recommendation.

Here are his thoughts on the film.

“The truth is easier to remember. ” – Lucy

Number of Times Seen – 1 (19 Mar 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Three stories that revolve around decisions in life that all deal with adoption.

My Take on it – before getting this suggestion, I’d never even heard of this film and that’s truly a shame.

The cast is superb and its so interesting watching all three of these stories unfold before us.

Annette Benning, Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Jimmy Smits, Cherry Jones, David Ramsey, David Morse and S. Epatha Merkerson are all excellent here and give their characters such depth that we want to see what will happen to each and every one of them.  Even the supporting roles are great and with actors like Elizabeth Pena, Lisa Gay Hamilton, Lawrence Pressman, Ahmed Best (yes Jar Jar) and Amy Brenneman in these roles, it’s hard to go wrong

The script is written really well and it lets us get so emotionally invested in all three of the stories that we stayed glued to everything going on.

They do a great job transitioning between the three stories very smoothly and it leaves us trying to guess what kind of connection there is between the stories, if any.

The mysterious way it all is done is great

This is truly an ensemble piece because each of the stories complement one another because so many of the characters are trying to find ways to fill holes in their lives.

We get to also see different stories dealing with women going through similar decisions in life yet each deals with things in their own unique way.

Bottom Line -Liked the way that this film moves smoothly between the three storylines and makes us try and guess what, if any, connections there are between the stories.  Amazing cast works quite well here.  Really enjoyed how each story was so diversely different from the others because it easily allows us to follow each individual story.  The script is wonderfully written because it delves so deeply into the emotions of these characters that we easily care so much about them and where the paths of their lives lead them. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Naomi Watts only spent eight days filming her leading role. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. Ir’s always a pleasure when someone enjoys a film that I recommend, especially one that they’ve never heard of. Truthfully, this didn’t do well at the box office. However look at that cast! They do great work here and this did receive quite a bit of critical acclaim acclaim. For example, garnered two nominations at the Independent Spirit Awards for Samuel L. Jackson and Naomi Watts.

It’s been years since I’ve seen this actually, but it has always stuck with me. Glad you enjoyed it!
