Stay Tuned (1992)

[Hooded men are about to carry Roy Knable to the guillotine] “Hi, fellas, I loved you in Star Wars.” – Roy Knable

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (cable in the 90’s and 23 Jul 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A man obsessed with watching TV unwittingly makes a deal with the devil that forces him and his wife to be sucked into a Hellish TV where they must survive through Satanic versions of known TV shows and movies.

My Take on it – As a fan of TV shows and movies, I have always loved this movie because it is something that is easy for people like me to relate to.

The premise works really well and loved the fact that it’s filled with great parodies of so many forms of media that we all can easily recognize.

They get so many of the parodies nearly perfectly and this film in ways reminds me of the way that MAD magazine use to parody things or even skits of Saturday Night Live.

John Ritter and Pam Dawber are the perfect casting choices as the leads largely due to their connections to 70’s and 80’s TV.

Jeffrey Jones is another great casting choice as the villain because he was so great in that kind of role during the 80’s.

The fact that all three of them get to play various roles here makes this so much fun to watch.

This film constantly is a reminder of the great way things were parodied during the 80’s and 90’s and unfortunately, things have tapered off in that field in recent years.

Bottom Line – Great premise that works so well especially for those of us who can relate so much to the main characters.  The parodies are done so well that its amazing how they were able to get so many of them right. Great casting choice of Ritter and Dawber as the leads due to their own TV histories.  Jones is the perfect 80’s villain and works well in all the various roles he gets to play here. Really fun to watch this film because it reminds me so much of what good parodies were like back in the 80’s and 90’s and have lost some of their impact in the years since. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – At one point while switching channels inside the Hell TV world, Roy (John Ritter) ends up on the set of Three’s Company (1976). (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
