The Paper (1994)

“I hate columnists! Why do I have all these columnists? I got political columnists, guest columnists… celebrity columnists – The only thing I don’t have is a dead columnist. That’s the kind I could really use.” – Bernie

Number of Times Seen – Probably 3 Times (Video in the 90’s, 13 Dec 2017)

Brief Synopsis – A day in the life of a Newspaper editor as he must make various life changing decisions while trying to still get the biggest scoop of his career.

My Take on it – This is a fun film because of the way it shows us the inner workings of a newspaper.

Obviously in the 24 years since this film came out, the world has changed so much and much of what is depicted here is no longer relevant yet for those of us who recall how things were done back then, it stays quite thrilling.

Director Ron Howard does a really nice job showing us how all the pieces of a newspaper team work together in order to get the public the most accurate and factual news in a timely manner.

The cast is superb and is lead by Michael Ketaon and Robert Duvall who take us through the ins and outs of how news gets published in the days of a daily paper.

They are able to keep the pace quite fast which helps keep things so thrilling the whole way through because each and every character is constantly trying to get things done in the way they feel is the best.

Bottom Line – Howard does a great job trying to show us the various jobs needed by a newspaper in order to get the public the news in the quickest yet most accurate way. Amazing cast led by Keaton and Duvall keep things so entertaining. The story is thrilling because we get to see the way things move on the inside in a fast paced way as everyone tries to make sure things get done the right way. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – All five top billed cast members have been nominated for one or more Academy Award: Michael Keaton (one nomination) Robert Duvall (one win, six nominations), Glenn Close (six nominations), Marisa Tomei (one win, two nominations), and Randy Quaid (one nomination). Additionally, Jason Robards has won two Oscars and nominated once more, and writer Richard Price, who appears as himself in the movie, received one Oscar nomination. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
