The Robin Williams Blogathon 2018 – Man of the Year (2006)

This is my final of 3 reviews for the Robin Williams Blogathon 2018 being hosted by Gill of WeegieMidget and Crystal from In Good Old Days of Classic Hollywood.

Tnx for letting me partake ladies!

“[quoting Benjamin Franklin] Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reason. ” – Tom Dobbs

Number of Times Seen – 2 (27 Jan 2007 and 30 Jan 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A TV talk show pundit decides to run for President and due to a computer malfunction, he actually manages to win.

My Take on it – I have always been a bigger fan of satirical news programs on Tv and like many other people relied more on those shows for the news instead of watching real news programs.

This film takes the idea a step further and has the comedian run for President despite not having a real chance of winning.

Despite this idea being quite far fetched, it’s interesting because it gives us an idea of what could possible happen if someone closer to the common man would run for office and actually win and what kind of changes he would try to make.

Robin Williams is a great choice for the lead here because he is able to seem quite Presidential while at the same time keep things hilariously funny.

They should have kept the romantic aspects of the characters out of the premise because it just helps to muddle things up instead of advancing the real story.

Bottom Line – Great idea that reminds us all about the corruption of politics and politicians.  Shows what kind of changes could be made if someone closer to the working man actually had a chance to win. Williams is great in the title role and manages to seem quite Presidential yet maintains his ability to still keep things extremely funny.  The world truly needs politicians like this one. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In one scene, playing on a television in the background, is Billy Crystal dressed as a turkey and Robert De Niro as a pilgrim. The clip is from a post-9/11 commercial to boost New York tourism directed by Barry Levinson. In the ad, the two squabble about their costumes as participants on a Macy’s Thanksgiving parade float. Crystal tries to persuade De Niro to trade outfits with him, at one point being reduced to parodying the latter actor’s famous line from Taxi Driver (1976): “Are you gobbling at me? Are you gobbling at me?” (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
