Second Act (2018)

“I wish we lived in a world where street smarts equals book smarts.” – Maya

Number of Times Seen – 1 (5 Jan 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A discount store assistant manager is offered a high position in a cosmetic company based on a false resume and must try to prove she is worthy of such a job.

My Take on it – This is a film that my wife and I decided to go see on a whim.

We knew absolutely nothing about it and decided to see what it was all about.

The film has a very fun atmosphere all around it and the premise is quite interesting yet they fail to execute it properly which hurts it so much.

The story starts off quite well and then nosedives when they decide to hijack the main storyline with a subplot that probably doesn’t even need to be there because it just takes away from the realistic feeling of the first part of the movie.

Jennifer Lopez does a fine job in the lead and her friendships with various other characters actually comes off feeling quite realistic yet something still feels off the entire time with the way the story moves along.

This movie has a twist part of the way through that takes so much away from the believability of it all because it not only gives a crazy coincidence credence, but it also opens up the rest of the film to some huge plot holes which have no reason to be there at all.

Bottom Line – Fun film that has a great idea yet is executed quite poorly. The story starts off really well and then is hijacked by a sub plot which changes the direction of it all. Lopez is fine in the title role, and her friendship with other characters feel realistic yet something feels wrong the whole time. One of the twists in the film derails the believability of the story because it opens up a very crazy coincidence while at the same time also giving the film some really big plot holes that were unnecessary.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When addressing the cast and crew upon completion of principal photography, Pete Segal said that the cast and crew of Second Act was his “favorite family” of everyone he’s worked with.(From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
