At Eternity’s Gate (2018)

“Maybe God made me a painter for people who aren’t born yet. It is said, Life is for sowing. The harvest is not here. ” – Vincent Van Gogh

Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Feb 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A view of the later years of the life of Vincent Van Gogh as he struggled with the meaning of his work.

My Take on it – This is a film that I had very low expectation for going in and those expectations were matched and even surpassed because I found this film to be a complete mess.

The story is told in a super slow fashion and it relies much too heavily on existential themes that go off on too many tangents along the way instead of trying to give us a complete and enjoyable story that actually flows and feels consistent.

Willem Dafoe does a nice job wit the character and I can completely understand how some critics would love him in this role and even manage to garner numerous nominations and awards for this role (including an Oscar nomination for Best Actor), but that unfortunately doesn’t at all help in making this film even more enjoyable or even digestible to watch.

This film is paced incredibly slowly and things take much too long to transpire.

This makes things even more torturous and boring to watch because nothing really happens along the way.

The movie also doesn’t manage to really give us more insight into the life of this famed artist and looks at things from a pretty strange perspective the entire time.

Bottom Line – Really boring film that is super slow and relies too heavily on existential themes instead of giving us an interesting story.  Dafoe does a nice job with the role and I can understand how he could get accolades for his performance, but that doesn’t make this any easier of a film to watch because it’s incredibly slow and boring and doesn’t add anything to what I already knew about the life of this famed artist.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The main theatrical poster and title is a photo shot of one of van Goghs last self portraits, done after he sliced off a piece of his ear. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)

  1. 2 of 10 seems way too low. It is slow but an intriguing story, a beautiful look to it and Dafoe’s performance. The one thing it did is make me go back and watch Lust For Life (for the first time) with Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh in an Oscar nominated performance. Douglas is all over the place – chewing the scenery and then some nice subtle work – but head to head – Dafoe is much better. Neither won the Oscar.
