Dolemite is My Name (2019)

“You know what they say brother – luck is where opportunity meets preparation.” – Rudy Ray Moore

Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Oct 2019)

Brief Synopsis – An eccentric underground stand up comedian decides to make a movie using his rap style jokes and kung fu to try and give the world a film that he believes they want to see on screen.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few weeks ago and was surprised to here that it was a comeback film for Eddie Murphy.

Murphy was great in his prime, but his performances have gone down hill over the past twenty plus years and there are very few if any hits that he has made in that time span.

Thankfully, this film allows us to once again see the real Murphy as he creates a character here who might be rude and crude, but he is lovable because his motives are to make people enjoy what he has to offer to the world.

The fact that this is based on a real story helps turn many of the unbelievable scenes and scenarios and transform them into the believable.

The story has numerous extreme circumstances but the way that they present them make it all fun and enjoyable the whole way through.

Murphys performance is what makes this film so great and I won’t be surprised if he is able to garner a few award nominations for what he does here.

The story unfolds in a great way and he blends into this character so well that we sometimes forget that it is actually Murphy playing a role instead of being his real personality all along.

Bottom Line – he real Eddie Murphy is back again with this film as he once again inhabits a character who might be rude and crude yet still is enjoyable to watch. The film deals with many extreme circumstances that are dealt with in really fun and enjoyable ways.  The fact that this is based on real events adds so much to things because it helps make the unbelievable seem even more realistic. The film is obviously held up by the great performance by Murphy who shows that he can still play characters like this and lead the way to keeping things fun and enjoyable as the story unfolds. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Keegan-Michael Key was a huge fan of Rudy Ray Moore before getting cast in this film. While working on The Predator (2018), the other cast members would come to his trailer to watch Moore’s films. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (8/10)
