Number of Times Seen – Twice (9 Mar 2011 and 2 Dec 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Twenty years after the events of the previous film, the son of the Flynn tries to find who father who disappeared years earlier.

My Take on it – When Cat announced this blogathon and I thought to review the original TRON (1982) for it, I began to wonder if I should also watch and review the sequel along with it especially given the fact that I recalled not liking this film as much as the original.

In the end, I decided that it would be a very fitting tribute to Jeff Bridges if I watch both movies that feature the story of Flynn.

This is a nice idea for a sequel even if much of it feels as if it is recycling ideas from the original film and updating them by using more advanced special effects than were available when the original was made.

At the same time, this movie gives us the opportunity to see the potential that the premise has by utilizing more modern technology to make the look and feel of the story work that much better.

Loved the way that this film uses the “de-aging” technology and makes characters seem younger than they truly are in a very believable way.

Grant Hedlund is a fine actor, but he doesn’t manage to be able to hold up the story as well as Bridges did 28 years earlier.

Loved seeing Bruce Boxleitner in this film, but he is basically used as a cameo and isn’t given enough to do.

They do a great job dealing with many philosophical, technological and personal issues in a very poignant way.

Bottom Line – Nice sequel that is essentially the same story yet updated for modern audiences. The special effects are superb and show how much potential there was for the original film despite the lack of technology at the time.  The “de-aging” process works really well and makes us truly believe the younger characters. Hedlund is a good actor, but he doesn’t manage to hold things up here as well as Bridges did in the original film. Boxleitner appears in a cameo and feels underused here.  Liked the way that the story tries to deal with some very poignant issues that affect both the digital and real world.  Recommended!
