I Still Believe (2020)

“I’ve learned that suffering doesn’t destroy faith, it refines it.” – Melissa

Number of Times Seen – 1 (29 Mar 2020)

Brief Synopsis – An aspiring faith singer falls in love with a girl with an illness and they both must work together to overcome the hurdles in life via their faith.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I came across by accident and was drawn into it by the fact that it’s based on real events.

The film is told from a faith based aspect and no matter how hard they seem to try here, it all comes across as being far too preachy for its own good.

They manage to develop these characters quite well and we easily get to understand who they are and what their goals seem to be.

The movie is filled with lots of songs and singing by the characters which helps break up the monotony of some of the scenes as presented.

THe two main characters played by K.J. Apa and Britt Robertson have mediocre chemistry together and that  also hurts this film because certain scenes seem less believable even though this is based on real events.

The last quarter of the film feels a bit too rushed and that also deviates from the impact that this film has to potentially make on the way people look at love and relationships which is a shame because they could have done even more with this kind of premise.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea that as hard as they try they can’t keep things from being too preachy. The characters are developed well and we get a clear idea of who they all are and what their goals are.  The songs and singing are done well and help keep the story from becoming too monotonous.  The chemistry between Apa and Robertson is a bit lacking and that hurts the believability of some scenes despite the fact that this is based on real events.  The end of the film feels a bit too rushed and that takes a bit away from any impact this film should have.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – K.J. Apa and Britt Robertson previously played a couple in the film A Dog’s Purpose. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
