The Rhythm Section (2020)

“[on Reza] He believes in profit… not *The Prophet* ” – Mark Sera

Number of Times Seen – 1 (7 Apr 2020)

Brief Synopsis – A woman who’s family members were killed in a plane crash is trained as an assassin in order to avenge their murder.

My Take on it – This is a film that based on the premise seemed like it could be quite good.

Unfortunately, they chose to present things in a typical fashion and that doesn’t allow for them to add much to this kind of story line which has been overdone so much in the past.

Blake Lively and Jude Law are both fine actors yet neither is able to bring anything unique to the characters they portray that would help differentiate them from other incarnations of these kind of characters.

The story is told in a lackluster fashion and fails to find a reason for us to care about the story or the characters because they follow certain common story lines used in these kind of films.

The one things that they get right here are with the cation scenes which are somewhat thrilling to watch.

Things get slightly repetitive towards the end which takes away from this aspect tho.

This is a movie that had so much more potential than is realized and that’s quite a shame because they squander things far too much.

Bottom Line – Really mediocre film that doesn’t add much to the genre. Lively and Law are both fine here, but nether is able to bring us something new and fresh with their characters as things begin to move along. The story itself is told in a lackluster fashion and it never seems as if they are trying to do something interesting with this story. The action scenes are a bit thrilling and that is the main reason to try and watch this film, but they get tedious along the way.  Despite this film having so much more potential, it all feels much too squandered in the way things are presented which is quite a shame.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During a brutal fight sequence between Jude Law (B) and Blake Lively (Stephanie) that was filmed in just one take after weeks of preparation, Blake broke her hand after delivering a powerful punch to Jude’s chest. It is a case of “life imitating art”, because in the book, Stephanie Patrick breaks her fingers, though in a different way. The “piece of glass in Stephanie’s hand” event, was added to a different fight scene, so that Blake Lively could act later scenes with that hand bandaged up. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)

  1. Hi Rob! Hope you’re coping well during the lockdown. I saw this months ago and haven’t even bothered to review it. I agree that both leads are ok, but I find it boring and the action direction is actually more dizzying than exciting.
