“Taft is not really a politician. In fact, Taft admitted to his wife that he hated politics. Taft is a very figure himself, but he’s a lawyer and had been a judge and really his greatest ambition was never to be President. It was to be a Supreme Court Justice.” – Michael Kazin

Brief Synopsis – An intimate look at the Presidential election of 1912 where two former Presidents faced off against a Governor with only two years of political experience.
My Take on it – As a fan of history and most specifically US History, I have always been fascinated by the Presidency.
When I came across this series by accident, I was quite interested in seeing what it was all about.
The fact that we are in an election year also piqued my interest in seeing what this series has to say about past Presidential elections and their effects on the way that these elections are run today.
This is an election that I knew very little about the specifics, yet knew that it was a three way run off between two former Presidents; Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft and a relatively unknown in the political realm, Woodrow Wilson.
The way that they show how this very controversial election changed the face of American politics is great because we get to see how both main parties began to move in some very progressive directions which have altered the face of American politics over the past Century.
This episode is able to show how politics and political wrangling could ruin such a strong friendship that Roosevelt and Taft shared.
The repercussions of their rift would last for a long time after the ballots were counted.
We can learn so much by the way that these men treated one another.
This election also is able to show us how the usual two party system of the Presidential election can be set into a tailspin when there are 3 major candidates jockeying for the Presidency and how it could lead to an unexpected victory.
These three candidates campaigned in vastly different ways and that also had a large effect on the eventual outcome of this election.
Bottom Line – Great look at a very controversial election that changed the direction of American politics forever. The way that they show how politics caused such a rift in the strong friendship between Roosevelt and his heir to the Presidency, Taft is quite eye opening and we can learn so much from the way that they treated each other and their broken friendship for years after this election. This election also is able to show the way that a three way campaign can hurt an election and help an underdog take control. The campaigns of these three men were all vastly different and that was also helpful in deciding the victor. Recommended!
