Brief Synopsis – A slave/gladiator helps his fellow slaves revolt against Rome as they seek to find a way to freedom.
My Take on it – Such a great epic story that works sow ell. Kirk Douglas is superb in the title role and really helps make the viewer feel the importance of freedom from oppression. The first third of the movie deals with the way slaves were treated and how they were turned into sport for the elite and this helps the slaves see what they are missing and give them something to strive for. Some of the epic scenes in the film are wondrous to look at due to the sheer number of people in each shot. The battle scenes (both on small and large scales) are quite spectacular to watch and this adds so much mor epower and realism to it all. The movie is over 3 hours long, yet doesn’t feel that way due to the way it all plays out. The cats is amazing and I still in awe of the amount of powerful actors used here in somewhat small parts. Stanley Kubrick once again was able to show that he could handle just about any genre of film and still make it look so fantastic.
Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Sir Peter Ustinov joked about his daughter, born at the beginning of production, being in kindergarten by the time this movie was finished. When asked what her father did for a living, she would answer, “Spartacus”. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy (9/10) (no change from original review)
