For this month’s next review for Genre Grandeur – Car Chase Movies, here’s a review of Fast Five (2011) by Darren of Movie Reviews 101.

Thanks again to David of BluePrint: Review for choosing this month’s genre.

Next month’s genre has been chosen by Jim O’Kane of TvDads.com and we will be reviewing our favorite “As Himself” Movies — movies where a star is playing themselves, often in a tongue-in-cheek way.

Let’s see what Darren thought of this movie:

Fast & Furious 5

Justin Lin returns for his third installment directing this franchise. Fast Five was the beginning of making things mega-blockbuster level. Turning the $125 Million budget into $625 Million worldwide. It brings back some of our favourites while introducing us to others.

Fast Five follows Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) running after a daring prison hijack. They find themselves in Brazil forced into taking a job to get some money. However, this attracts the attention of ruthless law enforcement agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson).

Dom, Mia and Brian learn of a much bigger score and call in a host of other friends to complete it. Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Ludacris), Vince (Matt Schulze), Han (Sung Kang), Gisele (Gal Gadot), Leo (Tego Calderon) and Santos (Dom Omar). They play on working together to steal Reyes’ (Joaquim de Almeida) safe from the tightest security in the city. Meanwhile, Hobbs is looking to do anything to track down the wanted men.

In this installment of the movie, we get to see a much bigger threat and we have moved on from stealing DVD players. We reach the level of full blown heist movie as we look to see the gang doing good instead of committing crimes. The chases hit new heights, the fight scenes are brutal and you will never forget the final showdown.

This movie managed to push the Fast franchise into a new level of movies, hitting the level that only Marvel Movies had been achieving. There is no doubt Dwayne Johnson helped make the franchise reach a new level with his global appeal. However, the cast continues to be fantastic and makes this the very best in the franchise.

My Rating 5/5
