The Trench (1999)

“Ya got Jocks to the left of you, Micks to the right. That’s all you need to know for now.” – Sgt. Telford Winter

Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 May 2024)

Brief Synopsis – A platoon of English soldiers during The Battle of the Somme try and deal with the difficult warfare being fought in trenches.

My Take on it – Mediocre film that shows the day to day life of soldiers in the trenches during World War I. The characters aren’t developed well enough along the way which makes everyone seem just like cannon fodder throughout. The cats is great with performances by a young Daniel Craig, Cillian Murphy and Ben Whishaw, but even they can’t help raise the stakes of the story as it moves along. They do a nice job showing the terror and dangers of this kind of warfare, but when the characters all seem too bland, it takes away from things far more than one wants.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In preparation for the film, Writer and Director William Boyd sent the main cast to a replica trench for a night, to experience the conditions the British Army suffered. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
