Brief Synopsis – The true story of what American POW’s did to survive in a deadly Vietnamese prisoner of war camp

My Take on it – I remember hearing about this movie when it came out, but for some reason, I never got around to watching it until now 28 years later.

Movie watchers are familiar with life in POW camps because we’ve seen it depicted in movies since the end of WWII. Stalag 17(1953), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and The Great Escape (1963) gave us an idea of how things worked in Germany and Japan during WWII.

Chuck Norris’ Missing in Action (1984) and Sly’s Rambo: First Blood Part II ( 1985) brought us to the jungles of Vietnam, but this movie portrays the characters in a completely different setting and circumstances than the others do because here it seems that since the allied flyers are being detained in a ‘hotel’, then they must be treated better.

This movie shows us the kind of psychological warfare that the enemy attacked our men with in grueling detail.

It shows us brave men working together in order to survive the mental and physical hardships set upon them.

The cast is ok, but no one stands out enough to warrant being singled out.

Suffuce it to say, they all act extremely brave while portraying these heroic men.

Clearly shows a group of men doing their best to try and survive some of the worst ordeals possible.

Bottom Line – Great depiction of men trying their best while at their worse. None of the actors stand out but they all showed true courage during the years spent there. Very moving portrayal at the psychological warfare fought against these brave men. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – A DVD release of the film had been anticipated for some time in 2008, with the package to include a new interview with former POW and 2008 presidential candidate John McCain. However, the film’s release was suspended by Warner Bros. due to McCain being the Republican Party nominee. The week following the 2008 US presidential election, the DVD went forward into release.(From Wikipedia)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
