Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Jun 2016)

Brief Synopsis – A journalist who wants to get ahead in the business agrees to go on assignment in the Middle East and soon finds out how things work in the outside world

My Take on it – I heard about this film a few months ago and was actually curious to see what it was really about since it seems like a war drama, but has Tina Fey in it.

The truth is, this movie is more of a drama than a comedy, but it takes real situations in war and adds a bit of humorous one liners or actions that it cleverly shows as satire.

We are shown a picture of how crazy life can get for journalist in war zones when they must deal with life and death decisions and situations on a daily basis.

Fey really was the perfect choice for this lead because she really can do the serious scenes along with the crazy and funny ones very well.

I find some of the scenes hard to believe that they really happened, but on the other hand, if one thinks about the situation these journalists find themselves in while overseas, you never really know, it is possible that it may all be true.

Besides Fey, the supporting cast does a nice job especially Martin Freeman as a Scottish journalist serving alongside Fey on the front.

Bottom Line – Very fun and poignant comedy/drama that tries to show us how crazy life can get for overseas correspondents. Fey does an excellent job juggling the comedic and dramatic scenes throughout. Great supporting cast helps move this along. Hard to believe that this is all supposedly completely true, but it works much more than not and keeps things as believable as possible given the circumstances. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In a February 2016 interview with NPR, Kim Barker, who wrote “The Taliban Shuffle”, the book that was the basis for this movie, said Tina Fey first became interested in the memoir when Michiko Kakutani reviewed the book for the New York Times. Kakutani said Barker “depicts herself as a sort of Tina Fey character.”(From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
