A Dog’s Purpose (2017)

“I had a purpose, I was needed again and again and again. With each new life I was learning a new lesson.” – Dog

Number of Times Seen – 1 (20 Apr 2017)

Brief Synopsis – Over the period of numerous lifetimes, a dog tries to find his purpose in the world.

My Take on it – A bit over a month ago, I saw the trailer for this film and was quite intrigued to see what it could give us after such a great trailer.

Unfortunately, the trailer IS the movie.

We aren’t really given much more to see than what we already know after watching a two minute preview.

Josh Gad is funny as the voice of the dog but he gets a bit too repetitive as things move forward.

I wonder if the film had been a bit longer and focused even more on each of the stories if it would have been more interesting to watch.

As is, it feels quite mediocre and doesn’t come to feeling as poignant as one would hope for from a story like this.

I truly wish that they had done this better, because the potential for something greater is there yet not achieved.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea for a film that could have been done even better.  The biggest problem is that once you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve seen the whole film which is disappointing.  Perhaps if the film had been longer, it might have given us even more insight, but as it is, it feels completely average instead of poignant like it should.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Prior to theatrical release, controversy arose when behind-the-scenes footage surfaced and appeared to show a distressed dog being forcibly submerged into turbulent pool water during filming. As a result of the leaked footage, the filmmakers chose to cancel the U.S. premiere. However, it was announced on February 4th, 2017 by the American Humane Association that the footage was indeed fake. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. we’re in agreement once again. I, too, was intrigued by the trailer, wondering if it could be something substantial rather than a cheesy, weepfest. It fell somewhere in the middle and as you said – between the trailer and every major beat being telegraphed way ahead of time – there wasn’t a single surprise in the lot. Some of the stories were better than others. The cast is game (dog’s included) and at the end – when Dennis Quaid, as the adult version of a younger character from earlier, realizes that his dog has “returned” with his old jump off the back and catch a deflated football like a frisbee (no spoiler here – as MovieRob said – it’s all in the trailer), there was the mildest tug on my heartstrings. Movie’s OK, but it’ll play on HBO (when it arrives) just as well as on the big screen.
