This is my 3975th Review
Thanks to Carl of Listening to Film for this recommendation.
Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Apr 2018)
Brief Synopsis – A daredevil stuntman convinced the owners of the newly created automobile companies that a race around the world by car will help promote sales.
My Take on it – This is a film that I had seen bits and pieces of over the years, but never sat down to watch the whole thing.
This is a really fun film despite the various flaws that keep popping up throughout.
The cats is great with Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Natalie Wood all giving us great performances here.
The humor in the film is very tongue-in-cheek and is hit or miss, but there are more hits than misses along the way.
As I was watching this, I was amazed at how much Professor Fate reminded me of Dick Dasterdly from the cartoon Wacky Races and after watching the film was surprised to find out that they based the cartoon on this film (see Trivia section below).
The best scene in this film by far is the Pie fight and it has me laughing from start to finish because it was done so well.
Bottom Line – Fun film that has lots and lots of flaws in it. The humor works part of the time, but other times it falls completely flat. The cast is great with Curtis, Lemmon and Wood all giving enjoyable performances. Loved how the character of Professor Fate reminded me of Dick Dasterdly from the cartoon Wacky Races and then found out that it was based on this film. The pie fight is such an amazing scene and made me laugh the entire time. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia#1 – During the pie fight, the Great Leslie remains clean while everyone else is covered in pie. Tony Curtis was actually changing clothes several times, because he all too often got hit with pie during filming. (From IMDB)
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia#2 – This film was the inspiration for the Saturday morning cartoon show Wacky Races (1968): Dick Dastardly and his sidekick Muttley were based on Professor Fate and Max, Penelope Pitstop was based on Maggie DuBois and Peter Perfect was based on Leslie. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
