Indecent Proposal (1993)

“If you ever want something badly, let it go. If it comes back to you, then it’s yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never yours to begin with. ” – Diana

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Theater in ’93, cable, 22 Jul 2007 and 10 May 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A young couple trying to make a fortune in Vegas get an offer from a billionaire that they find hard to refuse.

My Take on it – This film presents a great idea and manages to explore it quite well for most of the film before getting derailed two-thirds of the way in.

The idea of what is buy-able in life and what isn’t works quite well here and leaves so much open for debate from both a practical and moral standpoint.

The cast was chosen really well and Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson are all great here because they get to play very developed characters at crossroads in their lives.

Moore and Harrelson’s characters feel very realistic and could be people we might meet on the street or even already know which helps make the plot feel even more plausible.

Redford, usually doesn’t play such creepy roles as he does here, but he still manages to nail it quite easily.

His character might have moral issues, but he tries to show that there is much more to everything than he originally lets on and he manages to also shine despite the kind of man he plays here.

Bottom Line – Great premise that allows for so much debate as to what is buy-able and what is not. The last third of the film doesn’t work as well as the first two thirds and seems creepier than it should. Great cast led by Redford, Moore and Harrelson give us developed characters that look and feel quite realistic. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Director Adrian Lyne was originally dismissive of casting Woody Harrelson as David, but changed his mind after watching White Men Can’t Jump (1992). Harrelson said in one interview that doing love scenes with Demi Moore was uncomfortable because he was good friends with Moore’s then-husband, Bruce Willis. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
