The Kurt Russell Blogathon – Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (2005)

This is my 2nd of 3 reviews for the The Kurt Russell Blogathon 2018 being hosted by Gill of WeegieMidget.

Tnx for letting me partake Gill!

“You’re taking your kid and your horse to the Breeder’s Cup tomorrow. ‘Cause that’s the dream of every real horseman. It’s the dream of every Father. A dream damn few ever get to see. Damn few. Trust me on that one.” – Pop

Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 May 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A horse trainer and his daughter buy a wounded horse in hopes of rehabilitating it.

My Take on it – I have always enjoyed inspirational Horse racing films and Seabiscuit (2003)  and Secretariat (2010) are both among my favorite films of their respective years.

This film does a fine job of keeping things inspiration yet the fact that it is toted as “Inspired” helps with the fact that some of the elements presented are a bit too fantastical to believe that they truly happened.

Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning are both great here and they help keep us hoping against all hopes that things will eventually turn around for their characters and that things will eventually be alright.

This film hits too many points that make it feel like a sappy Hallmark Hall of Fame story instead of something that feels real inspirational.

Regardless of that, the story itself works and once the viewer is aware that unlike the horse racing films that I mentioned above, this story is pretty much complete fiction, it’s easy to get caught up in the thrill of the story.

The theme song of this film is great.

Check it out here:

Bottom Line – Very inspirational Horse racing film that is a bit too fantastical to be considered a true story yet it still uses some elements of truth in it to make it an enjoyable film. Russell and Fanning are great in this movie and help keep the viewer hoping that things will eventually turn out well for the characters. Feels a bit too Hallmark Hall of Fame-ish at certain points, yet still works overall.  Great theme songs works really well too.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – An advance showing of this film, was shown to several recording artists, who were then asked to submit ideas for theme songs. Bethany Dillon’s song “Dreamer” was chosen out of all the submissions. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
