3 Generations (2015)

“[narrating] Every year I blow on my candles and I make the same wish. I wish I was a boy. ” – Ray

Number of Times Seen – 1 (26 Jun 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A teenager who wants to have a sex change operation must get permission from her mother and estranged father in order to have the procedure happen.

My Take on it – This is a film that my wife and I saw the trailer for over a year ago and were quite interested in seeing what it was all about.

The premise is actually quite brilliant but the film doesn’t quite mange to find a way to present it properly.

It starts off really well, but eventually become a regular kind of story about parenting which sort of takes away from the overall idea.

The cast of this film is superb with Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon and especially Elle Fanning giving amazing performances in a very complex familial situation.

The story itself has its ups and downs with the way that its presented and some scenarios in the film work much better than others.

The premise itself is a very heavy one and they try too hard to infuse elements of comedy along the way in order to try and lighten things but the end result of that takes away from the uniqueness of the idea.

I can understand completely how this film failed to bring in viewers during its theatrical run, but it is definitely an idea that gives you so much to think about because they really bring forth some very interesting ideas along the way.

Bottom Line – Great idea that has a lot of trouble because it doesn’t quite know how to properly present the idea. The cast is superb with Watts, Sarandon and especially Fanning giving wonderful performances.  The story has its ups and down and some scenes work much better than other bit overall, the premise still feels too heavy despite many moments of humor thrown in along the way in order to try and lighten things.  This film starts off great, but loses its momentum along the way and becomes a regular film about parenting instead of staying on track with its unique premise.  Understandable how this film failed in the theaters, but it still gives the viewer so much to think about because of the realistic situations presented. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The film was originally slated for an American release on September 18, 2015, and was being shelved for over a year. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2015, and received mixed reviews from critics. The Weinstein Company then pulled the film from the schedule on September 15, 2 days after the premiere and 3 days before the planned release. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)
