City of Angels (1998)

Brief Synopsis – An Angel on Earth falls in love with a motivated surgeon and must try and find a way for them to be together.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw years ago and din’t care much for yet decided to give it another try just to see if something changed.

I must admit that I didn’t remember much about this film besides the two lead actors.

I have always loved Meg Ryan’s work and was hoping that she alone would be able to make this film more enjoyable to watch but she and her co-star Nicholas Cage have no chemistry together at all which makes you wonder so much why they were chosen to work together here.

The love between these two characters feels too fabricated and lacks any kind of realism at all largely due to the fact that they are not developed well at all.

This film leaves too much unexplained and they want us to try and guess as to what could be a plausible rationale for some of the things that happen (even on a small scale).

The one bright spot in this film is Dennis Franz who is great in a supporting role and helps make this film (almost) watchable just due to his performance here.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that has a nice premise but is executed very poorly. Ryan and Cage have no chemistry together at all here and it’s hard to imagine their characters even wanting to be together based solely on the way that they are developed. There is too much left unexplained and they expect us to guess about the rational behind a lot of things that happen here. Franz is great in a supporting role and almost makes this film watchable because he really is so enjoyable to watch in this role.
