Mission: Impossible II (2000)

“[during a briefing in Sevile, Spain] Mr. Hunt, this isn’t mission difficult, it’s mission impossible. “Difficult” should be a walk in the park for you. ” – Mission Commander Swanbeck

Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (Theater in 2000. cable, video and 19 Nov 2018)

Brief Synopsis – Ethan and his team are sent to find a rogue agent who has stolen a deadly virus before he uses it on the population.

My Take on it – Of the 6 films in this franchise, there is no question about the fact that this is purely the weakest film.

The plot is a bit silly and very little of it actually makes sense.

This film was directed by John Woo and it’s easy to see hos style of action imprinted throughout.

There are lots of slow motion sequences and it feels as if they want to emphasis these scenes over the actual storyline that they themselves probably realize is quite lacking.

The casting of Dougrey Scott as the villain is a big mistake largely due to the fact that he seems quite off balance since he plays the part too emotionally which makes things funnier instead of gripping.

The series needs to stick with the way things worked until now and not try to turn this series into an action kind of franchise like many other films have done because it just doesn’t gel well here.

Bottom Line – Purely the weakest of the films in the series.  Much of the plot make little to no sense.  It seems that this was an attempt to make this an all-out action film instead of keeping parts of it quiet cerebral.  Scott’s casting as the villain also seems very off balance because he is too emotional for such a ruthless role.   We get to see Woo’s style of action filled with lots of slow motion scenes which doesn’t gel as well with this kind of series.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – John Woo’s first cut of the film clocked in at three and a half hours. The studio balked at this length, and told him that the final length could not exceed two hours. This would explain why there are so many plot holes and continuity errors in the theatrical cut. (From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
