Hunter Killer (2018)

“What is better? Be right or Be alive? ” – Captain Joe Glass

Number of Times Seen – 1 (16 Dec 2018)

Brief Synopsis – A submarine commander is sent on a special mission to help rescue the Russian President from a coup.

My Take on it – This is a film that I was quite excited to see since it stars both Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman who are both stellar actors.

Unfortunately, this film’s story is quite mediocre in the way that it portrays the events and there are so many films in the submarine genre that are so much better and much more thrilling.

My hopes of seeing Butler and Oldman in great roles was also dashed here because they both feel too tame in these roles and some of their dialogue and actions seem more comical than impactful.

The plot itself feels like it’s a typical action thriller story that has been done and redone far too often and in a lot of cases much better than they manage here.

They seem to rehash many of the storylines of other films and this film seem to lack many new or original ideas.

This is actually quite unfortunate since this film has so much more untapped potential.

Some of the action scenes in this film are done quite well and are enjoyable yet nothing is really groundbreaking in the way things are presented.

Bottom Line – Very mediocre submarine film that isn’t as exciting as one would expect from a film in this genre.  Butler and Oldman both feel too tame in these roles and some of their dialogue is quite comical instead of impactful. The plot is a typical action adventure one that has been done much better in the past and this film seems to just be rehashing the plot of numerous other films without offering much that feels new or original at all which is quite unfortunate since there is so much more potential here.  Some of the action scenes are fun, but again, nothing seems groundbreaking enough.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – On June 16, 2015 the Alaska Dispatch News (ADN) reported that after Alaska Governor Bill Walker signed legislation essentially ending the state’s film subsidy program the producers of Hunter-Killer canceled all previously planned efforts to film exteriors for the project in Alaska. Rating – BAFTA Worthy (5/10)
