Dumplin’ (2018)

“Rosie Dickson’s your mom? Really?” – Callie

“Far as I know.” – Willowdean

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Jan 2019)

Brief Synopsis – An overweight teen decides to show her mother that even big girls can be a part of a beauty pageant.

My Take on it – This is a film that I saw a trailer fro a few months back and it looked quite interesting.

It takes the idea of judging a book by its cover to a new level by having characters that one wouldn’t usually expect to join a beauty pageant choose to participate in order to protest the way that they only allow certain “sizes” to be a part of it all.

To take this kind of premise that usually isn’t discussed and present it in a fun and enjoyable fashion helps make this film that much more poignant.

It is able to blend together both the comedic and dramatic aspects of this premise in a realistic fashion.

The main characters are developed really well and they help prove the point of the premise over and over through the course of the film.

This film hinges much of its story on the music of Dolly Parton and they utilize and integrate her list of songs really well into the movie.

This includes the original song that Parton wrote and sang for this film called Girl in the Movies which is really enjoyable to listen to.

It has so far been nominated for  Golden Globe for Best Original song and will hopefully also get an Oscar nomination in a few weeks time.

This movie is far from perfect but it has its heart in the right place which helps make it has an impact.

Bottom Line – Very interesting film that takes a subject matter not usually dealt with and presents it in a fun way.  They manage to get the point across about how one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and the way that the characters are developed helps show that point over and over.  The use of Dolly Parton songs is great and I especially love the new song that she wrote and sang for this film called The Girl in the Movies which has so far been nominated for Best song at the Globes and will hopefully also get a nomination at the Oscars too.  The film isn’t perfect but it does have its heart in the right place and is able to meld comedy and drama together quite well. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jennifer Aniston, who produced the film, used a number of Dolly Parton’s classic songs on the soundtrack since the main character, Willowdean, is a huge Dolly Parton fan. Aniston also got Parton to write some new songs for the film, including the theme song. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  1. haven’t seen this one yet. But listened to Dolly’s song. Unimpressed. Pretty pedestrian lyrics and not too catchy a melody. I can think of 3 songs from A Star is Born that are much better.
