No Strings Attached (2011)

“We don’t get to pick who we fall in love with, and it doesn’t happen like it should.” – Alvin

Number of Times Seen – Twice (2 May 2011 and 10 May 2019)

Brief Synopsis – Two college friends busy with their lives, decide to use each other in order to have just a physical relationship without the need for emotions.

My Take on it – This is a film that I aw not long after it came out and didn’t recall much about it besides the overall story line.

They are able to take the very formulaic rom-com genre and tweak it slightly in a way that still keeps things interesting along the way.

The choice to cast Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher in the leads is a great one and they have amazing chemistry together which helps make us believe the situations that they find themselves in.

This film takes a tried and true concept that has worked for decades and tries to find a way to prove whether a relationship is built more on the physical aspects or on the emotional ones or whether both are integral to a relationship working properly.

The story is paced quite well and things move along well even if things are extremely predictable right from the start.

Kevin Kline is superb in a very flashy supporting role which is able to add so much more laughter and humor to the story.

Bottom Line – Interesting twist ion the usual rom-com formula that works largely due to the great chemistry between Portman and Kutcher.  They are able to take a concept that has been tried and true for decades and try to prove whether the physical or emotional aspects of a relationship are more integral to making things work. The story is paced really well even if it’s quite predictable as to what will eventually happen. Kline is great in a very showy supporting role that adds so much humor and fun to the storyline. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Natalie Portman originally entered the project as a producer and not as a member of the cast. She remained an executive producer after being cast as Emma. The film is credited as a production of Portman’s production company, Handsomecharlie Films. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy (7/10)

  2. Basically this is Friends With Benefits’ poorer, more boring cousin. The leads have little chemistry and Portman is so annoying you kind of hope she’ll get hit by a bus halfway through. Please don’t bother..
