Number of movies seen from this year – 171
Number of movies reviewed – 187 (including 16 Encore Reviews)
As always, my choices for the best movies of this particular year don’t conform with all of the mainstream choices, but that’s one of the things that makes me unique.
This year had 9 Oscar nominated Best Picture films, but only 3 made my list (not even the ultimate winner)
My #1 is a great sci-fi/time travel movie that I can watch over and over again (like Groundhog Day (1993), u can do that in one viewing)
#2 is my favorite of the Best Picture nominees, that was a really heartwarming tale that felt magical.
#4 and #5 are my other two BP nominee choices
#3 and #7 are great superhero films that debuted that year
#6 is an Israeli film that is one of my favorites because I am very familiar with the world it takes place in.
#8 was a surprise favorite that is a really moving story about brotherly love and rivalry
#9 is proof that motion capture movies can work
Update 6 Aug 2017 – Midnight in Paris has now become my #7. All subsequent films have been moved down one notch.
Update 1 Jan 2018 – Arthur Christmas has now become my #2. All subsequent films have been moved down one notch.
Update 6 Mar 2018 – All-Star Superman has now become my #5. All subsequent films have been moved down one notch.
Update 10 Apr 2018 – A Better Life has now become my #4. All subsequent films have been moved down one notch.
Update 1 Mar 2020 – All-Star Superman has now become my #2. All subsequent films have been moved down one notch.

A great list. And a special year for me, this was when I first started up DSB and it’s interesting seeing a pretty comprehensive list of movies (damn you, Rob 😉 ) that came out of that year. A lot were on my list to see and so many I have since forgotten about. Good stuff dude

Yep, haven’t heard of #1 or 7, and I have been wanting to see Source Code ever since it came out and just haven’t for some reason. That will be remedied soon. Enjoyed most of these, but I’d switch out The Descendants for War Horse. Nice list! 🙂
