Knowing (2009)

“Right now my scientific mind is telling me to have nothing more to do with this. And yours should, too” – Phil Bergman

Number of Times Seen – Twice (Theater 14 Jun 2009 and 14 Aug 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A Professor discovers a coded message in a time capsule that seems to foretell future tragedies and tries to find a way to stop them.

My Take on it – This is a film that I recalled seeing in the theater a decade ago yet didn’t remember much about it besides the fact that it gets derailed along the way and stars Nicholas Cage.

The premise of this film has so much potential yet it is completely ruined here by the way they choose to take the story.

The first half of the film works really well as they present us with a seemingly prophetic view of future disasters, but once they go done the road of making this movie more of a supernatural thriller film, things don’t work well at all.

Cage himself causes many of the problems here due to the over the top fashion of how he presents his character and his attitudes in an overly intense way.

This is a premise that could have been able to give us something so much more poignant and impactful yet they completely miss out on the opportunity as they want to try and give us something that gets crazier and crazier as things move along.

It is so hard to try and understand why they derail stories that start off with so much promise like this one which is quite a shame.

Bottom Line – Terrible film that ruins a very intriguing premise. Cage is too intense for this kind of role and also drags things down even more by the way his characters does everything completely over the top. The choice to make this film more of a supernatural thriller as oppose to keeping it sci-fi also doesn’t help because it takes the story in directions that are not needed and it misses out on delivering a poignant and impactful kind of story which is quite a shame.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The entire airplane crash, starting from when we see the plane till the end of the scene, is one continuous shot. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (2/10)
