The Death and Life of John F. Donovan (2018)

“You are never to write to that man again, do you understand?” – Sam Turner

Number of Times Seen – 1 (18 Sep 2019)

Brief Synopsis – A young actor reflects ion his youth when he had a long running correspondence with a famous actor.

My Take on it – This is a film that I heard about a few months back and was glad to finally see what it was all about.

Unfortunately, this movie is a real big mess and nothing comes across coherently enough.

The problem is that this film has a very interesting premise yet doesn’t know how to present it in a way that things comes across as interesting or even coherent for that matter.

The film is somehow filled with lots of talented actors yet none of them are given enough to do with their characters for this story to work well.

The script is extremely uneven and choppy and doesn’t find a way to focus on a character to anchor things.

The film touches upon some great messages about social issues like the cost of fame, the yearning for fame by a child who after acquiring it has much to reflect on and how someone in the public eye can try to keep their own privacy intact along the way.

This is a movie that fails on so many different levels and doesn’t manage to find a way to stay interesting.

The story itself meanders along at a really slow pace that seems to go absolutely nowhere.

Bottom Line – Really a mess. This film has an interesting premise yet doesn’t know how to present it in a coherent and interesting way. The cast is quite talented, but the very choppy script doesn’t allow any of them to find a way to shine here. The story touches upon some great social messages like the effect of fame on a star, the yearning for fame by a kid and what happens when someone in the public eye tries to find a way to stay private in all that he does outside of the studio.  Fails on so many levels to keep things enjoyable because it just meanders along in a very chaotic and uninteresting way.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Jessica Chastain filmed scenes as a villain-type character, which were cut from the completed film due to timing and pacing. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy (3/10)
